SCMS Musical - KidFlix - A Smashing Hit!

Submitted by alison.hansen on Sat, 03/11/2023 - 20:07

SCMS presented its annual musical Mar 7-9 called KidFlix - it was a sampler, various songs from different musicals.   Seventy students were involved, whether they were acting, dancing, singing, or the tech crew behind-the-scenes.  Two students were even assistant directors.  It was a wonderful production!  Special thanks to Director Ms. Nichole Addis (drama teacher), Mr. BJ Wright (lang arts teacher and asst director), Ms. Kathryn Smith (choir teacher who helped with vocals) and Ms. Sarah Robbins (dance teacher who helped with choreography).

Essay Writing - A Fun and Engaging Way to Explore Evidence

Submitted by alison.hansen on Fri, 03/10/2023 - 16:17

Writing an essay where students explore different sides of an issue, find and sort through evidence, and cite it in their own essays is a significant part of the writing core in Utah state standards.  Students explore the differences between opinions and facts while they both read examples of and write their own persuasive/argumentative essays.  Students in language art class have written on a wide range of fun and engaging topics - everything from persuading their parents to get them this or that gift for Christmas to the merits of vending machines and types of snack food in schools.  Recently, students just wrapped up a unit on if bugs are a good source of protein or not which culminated in an extra exciting day where students could even try out a bug if they wanted to.  Middle-schoolers loved the "ewww" factor, many of them gave bugs a try (and even a few staff members!).  Many thanks to our English teachers for creating fun and engaging lessons students love to participate in and will remember!

SCMS Literacy Week - An Awesome Week!

Submitted by alison.hansen on Thu, 03/09/2023 - 20:25

SCMS PTA hosted a fun week at school - Literacy Week, in conjunction with Dr Seuss' Birthday.  Each day had a special dress-up day - one day was Character Crush where students and teachers dressed up like their favorite book character.  Throughout the week, students played Literacy Bingo, had a poetry slam, and various other activities focused on literacy.  A special thanks to Ms. Natasha Rogers, awesome mom and PTA representative who chaired the events and Ms. Wendy Fullmer, our librarian, who hosted and coordinated events at the school level.

Choir Extravaganza

On Sat, Mar 4, several students joined Ms. Smith representing SCMS at a choir festival at Jordan High School - it was the Saltaire's Youth Harmony Event.  Students learned various choral techniques, mingled with hundreds of other middle school choir students from around the state, and performed their new songs and strategies for their parents in the evening.  It was a SUPER Saturday!
